Primary 3 sees the beginning of the Key Stage One journey, building on the foundations of the Early Years. Fostering creativity through all areas of the curriculum, we aim to encourage independence and confidence as children take ownership of their own learning. Â
Primary 3 builds upon the Jolly Phonics programme, introducing the Jolly Grammar scheme. We explore a range of writing genres, developing our understanding through comprehension and independent writing. The teaching of reading is through both guided reading sessions and comprehension tasks. Our Creative Writing encourages the children to structure their ideas by planning, writing and presenting their work. This provides opportunities for children to use their phonetic awareness and grammar skills that we focus on in Primary 3.
Numeracy in Primary 3 builds upon previous learning while introducing the concepts of tens and units, the structure of the hundred square and multiplication. Practical activities are used to introduce and develop skills, while a focus on Problem Solving allows children to manage and use these skills. Topic Numeracy allows further opportunities for active learning, exploring topics including shape, measures, data handling and mental maths.
Activity Based Learning (ABL) incorporates our World Around Us topics, focusing on imaginative, creative, exploratory and cognitive play. ABL provides the opportunity for children to consolidate their learning through practical, fun activities. Children explore the world through topics including; Mighty Me, Celebrations, Interesting Inventions and Water World. Our final Primary 3 topic of Minibeasts concludes with a visit from Wee Critters and our much loved Bug Ball.
